Winter Ice Skating In Holland

Tuesday, 31. January 2012
Yes, ice skating in Holland is indeed possible as this dreamy movie impressively demonstrates.

This astonishing film was actually made on the ice skates of Dutch photographer and film maker Kasper Bak in Lemmer, a town in the north of Holland.

Photographer Erik Eti Smit said about his photo: "It is our national myth that in the olden days the canals were frozen from December till March, every winter. And when I was little, a sight such as this one was still quite common. We could skate almost every winter. Or maybe I just remember the winters when we had ice – and it certainly wasn't the whole winter."

And what do the Eskimos think about ice?

You never really know your friends from your enemies until the ice breaks.

    Kuno Lauener Gegen Kirchenglocken-Laerm

    Wednesday, 21. December 2011

Enchanting time lapse sequences of photographs shot from the International Space Station.

It’s amazing how well the cameras pick up the light of the cities below. The world looks like a living organism. Almost surreal: the northern lights.

In northern latitudes, this spectacular and colorful light effect is known as the ‘aurora borealis’ named by Pierre Gassendi in 1621 after the Roman goddess of dawn, Aurora, and the Greek name for the north wind, Boreas.

The southern lights are called ‘aurora australis’.

How’s that for a courageous woman somewhere down in Africa?!

Marlice van Vuuren, living in Namibia, is certainly one brave lady!

Marlice grew up surrounded by animals on her parents’ farm in Namibia where she has been given refuge for injured or orphaned animals.

As she also came into close contact to the San Bushmen community, she is one of only a handful of white people who can speak their language.

And yes, cheetahs are fast. See what Ben Johnson, Jamaican born Canadian Olympic 100m runner, had to say about these wonderful animals:

Absolutely. I cheetah all the time.

    (Ben Johnson)

Enjoy these super-speedy cats in this video.

The cheetah reaches by far the fastest land speed of any living animal. Between 70 and 75 mph (112 and 120 km/h).

It has the ability to accelerate from 0 to over 100 km/h (62mph) in an unbelievable just 3 seconds!

And then there’s another woman, Riana Van Nieuwenhuizen who lives with 4 cheetahs, 2 tigers and 5 lions!

46-year-old Riana said: "I love them all. But they’re a handful."

And finally, we leave you with what actor and ex-governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger once remarked:

I just use my muscles as a conversation piece, like someone walking a cheetah down 42nd Street.

Late Apple Computer founder Steve Jobs‘ (1955 – 2011) most inspiring speech at Stanford University about life, work, love and death.

Chief executive officer and co-founder of Apple Computer and Pixar Animation Studios, Steve Jobs, urged graduates to pursue their dreams no matter what, find what you love and see life’s setbacks as opportunities. He courageously doesn’t repress the uncanny end: Death!

This 114th commencement address was held at Stanford university on 12th June.

    His main points:

…It wasn’t all romantic; I didn’t have a dorm room, so I slept on the floor in friends rooms. I returned coke bottles for the 5 cent deposits to buy food with. And I would walk the seven miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal at the Hare Krishna temple. I loved it.

You can’t connect the dots looking forward, you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something: Your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. Because believing that the dots will connect down the road will give you the confidence to follow your heart even when it leads you off the well worn path, and that will make all the difference.

You’ve got to find what you love and that is as true for work as it is for your lovers. Your work is gonna fill a large part of your life and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work, and the only way to do great work ist to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking and don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart you’ll know when you find it. And like any great relationship it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking – don’t settle.

…For the past 33 years, I’ve looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: If today were the last day of my life, would I wanna do, what I am about to do today and whenever the answer has been ‘no’ for too many days in a row I know I need to change something…remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know, to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose – you are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.

No one wants to die. Even people who wanna go to heaven don’t want to die to get there…your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.

Don’t be trapped by dogma, which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice and most important: Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition, they somehow already know what you truly want to become.

    Pioneer Wingsuit Jumper

Patrick de Gayardon from France was one of the pioneers in the unique style of skysurfing, where a board is used to make aerobatic maneuvers. De Gayardon was famous for pushing the boundaries of skydiving by perfomring many stunts with his wing-suit, sometimes also called ‘bat suit’.

He died in Hawaii on 13th April 1998 during a skydive using the wing-suit, while testing a new modification to his parachute container; his death is attributed to a rigging error which was part of the new modification.
